Gemma offers short and long term therapy to adults with particular experience in those affected by abuse, trauma, anxiety, low self-esteem, shame, relationship difficulties, bereavement and gambling addiction.
About Gemma
Gemma is a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor offering counselling to adults in across the UK. She provides a compassionate and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their experiences at their own pace. Gemma’s main area of experience is supporting adults affected by sexual assault, sexual abuse and trauma, alongside anxiety, panic, emotional distress, low self-esteem, shame, relationship difficulties, bereavement and gambling addiction. Gemma uses a pluralistic approach, working collaboratively with each client and adapting therapy to their individual needs, experiences, and goals. She places particular importance on safety, choice, and trust, especially when working with trauma.
Approach
Gemma creates a space where clients can explore their experiences at their own pace. She uses a pluralistic approach, which means she works collaboratively with each client and draws on different therapeutic approaches depending on their individual needs, preferences, and goals, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Gemma believes the therapeutic relationship is central to effective counselling and that clients are the experts in their own lives. She therefore aims to work alongside clients rather than telling them what they should do, supporting them to develop greater understanding of themselves and their experiences, and to identify what feels helpful for them.
When working with trauma, sexual assault or sexual abuse, Gemma places particular importance on safety, choice, trust, and control. She never pressures clients to disclose experiences before they feel ready, and works sensitively with the impact that trauma can have on emotions, relationships, self-esteem, and everyday life.
Her overall approach is collaborative, respectful, and led by the individual, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and working within her competence.
What You Can Expect
You can expect a compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what you are experiencing, without fear of being judged or pressured. Gemma works collaboratively with each person, taking the time to understand their individual circumstances, needs, and goals, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
You remain in control of what you choose to explore and the pace of the work. Gemma recognises how important safety, choice, and trust can be, and will never pressure someone to talk about experiences before they feel ready.
Through your work together, you can expect to be listened to, taken seriously, and supported to make sense of your experiences. You can explore patterns, emotions, relationships, beliefs, and coping strategies where this feels helpful, and work towards developing greater self-understanding and finding ways of managing difficulties that feel right for you.
Gemma also aims to provide a consistent and reliable therapeutic relationship, with clear boundaries and confidentiality, whilst working ethically and within her professional competence. Ultimately, her role is to work alongside you rather than tell you what to do, supporting you to find your own way forward.
